Chapter 4 – The envelope

Jenna Dayton is both your average and not so average college girl. “Play hard, study hard, party even harder” that’s her motto. She’s truly a living contradiction; an athletic beautiful blonde valedictorian from Mercy High School, class of 2020. Now in UC Berkeley, she’s the star student that the teachers hate to love or love to hate. She’s very critical and knowledgeable, the teachers better think twice before saying even a small assumption with no basis whatsoever. No empty words should be uttered, or she will run you down like a wrecking ball through a stack of Jenga.

Born and raised in a Christian family, Jenna is always captivated with Angelology. She loves all those angels; Cherubims, Sheraphims, and especially the Archangels. This fascination is the main reason why Jenna Dayton works closely with Professor Benjamin Rabinowitz Th.d., the head of theology department in UC Berkeley. Jenna “happens” to take a theology class that Benjamin teaches just for fun; that’s how weird she is sometimes. She’s inspired on how Ben talks about how angels walk among us.  She talks to the professor after class, and the rest is history. They can spend hours and hours outside the class, sometimes over several hot links and lemon chicken outside Top Dog. In some ways, Ben has become the grandfather that Jenna lost during her childhood.

On one afternoon, Ben calls Jenna to the office.

“What’s up Doc?” Jenna greets the professor with a wide smile

“I’ll be going to Los Angeles this weekend for a convention.”

“Cool! What are you gonna do there?”

“There’s a Star Trek convention in Santa Monica. It’s been something I wanna see for a long time. I have a feeling that this might be the last time I can go”

“I didn’t know that you’re a fan!”

“Live long and prosper. “ Ben shows her the Vulcan hand sign. Suddenly Ben’s face turned grim.

“Um…what’s going on?”

Ben smiles solemnly. “It’s alright, child. Hey, can you do me a favor?”

Sure

“I need you to keep this envelop for me. Just in case something happens, can you please open it?” Ben hands up a big, thick, sealed envelope.

“Professor…What’s going on?” asks Jenna with a really concern look.

“Nothing…perhaps it’s just my old mind playing tricks on me. But humor me this time…Please? Keep it in a really safe place until the time comes”

“Anything for you, doc”

“Thanks, dear”

“Come back safely, you hear me” Jenna hugs Ben. “Enjoy your convention…Nerd!!”  Ben smiles widely at her.

Little does she know; that this is the last conversation she will ever have with her beloved mentor.
