Chapter 12 – 101 Hellmatians

Vincent hears multiple growls from the outside.
“What are hellhounds?”
“Aberration from hell that you don’t wanna meet in a dark alley” Jenna is shuddering.
Vincent whispers “Grab the book and the compass. We might have to make another run for it”
“Can you outrun them?”
“I don’t know. By the way, what’s the name of Benjamin’s friend?”
“Alfred Cohen..he lives somewhere in Seattle.”
“Is there any way you can pinpoint exactly where he is?” asks Vincent.
“If I can find a computer, I might”

Suddenly, one of the hellhounds crashes through the window. It’s huge, hairy, with red fiery eyes. It has fangs like a saber tooth tiger, and the body of a boar. Green and red liquid oozes from its mouth. It gazes at both Vincent and Jenna, and then lets out an eerie howl….at least 10 others hellhounds come crashing into the room. Jenna and Vincent are now surrounded by these primordial creatures. They’re inching closer and closer. The hellhounds form a “Circle of Death”, a hunting attack formation of the pack. Their preys usually never stand a chance once they’re in the middle of this formation.

Vincent gauges the enemy’s strength by staring at each of them. Jenna is holding the book tight to her chest, not knowing what to do. Vincent notices something; one of them looks different than the others. It has the same appearance, but with features similar to a fox; perhaps the leader of the pack. Finally, he finds one that seems to be the weakest of them all. Keep in mind; the weakest of these hellhounds is still fiercer than a lion.

With a lightning fast decisive movement, Vincent charges to the particular hellhound while grabbing Jenna’s hand. Vincent punches the hellhound’s jaw, sending it flying across the hotel room, creating a hole in the “Circle of Death”. The pack is shocked, as most of their preys never attack back.  Vincent darts like an arrow through the hole, and runs as fast as he can. He jumps from the 2nd floor of the hotel, and runs as fast as he can. Jenna looks back and she can see that the hellhounds are right behind them, with the fox leader sprinting in the front. Unlike Uvall, these hellhounds are relentless. They won’t stop until they can get their claws on their prey and devour them. The pack is gaining on Vincent and Jenna. Jenna tells Vincent “We gotta find a church”
“Does it gonna work?”
“I don’t know. But from the looks of things, we won’t outrun them”
So he runs towards downtown. They pass through a guy calling his girl friend a smart phone.  Jenna yells “Grab that”
“What for?”
“To find Alfred Cohen”

Vincent grabs the phone, and the guy yells “HEYY!!!!!”
Jenna shouts “Sorrryyy…..” Then she talks to the phone “Sorry. But we get a hold of his phone. Don’t call him back at this number.”

A couple of blocks ahead, Jenna spots a church on top of a small hill. Jenna shouts “Church !! Church !!!”
Vincent hurries to the cathedral. The hellhounds are now just a couple feet away. Jenna yells frantically “Faster!!! Faster!!!”
“You could lose a few pounds you know” says Vincent.
“You’re being an idiot at this time???” Jenna is furious

The fox hellhound is dangerously close now. Vincent and Jenna are at the bottom of the stairs, when all of a sudden Vincent slips at the first step of the church, and they both fall. The fox hellhound leaps to attack. The long sharp fangs are just inches away from Jenna’s face; she closes her eyes. “Oh no…not like this…”Then she hears a loud yelp. She opens her eyes, and the fox hellhound lies unconscious on the ground. The other hellhounds are catching up, and they are all hit an invisible wall and are thrown back. Jenna and Vincent are sitting still, amazed at what they’re seeing. The hellhounds are now just pacing back in front in frustration. The fox hellhound finally gains consciousness and stares sharply at Vincent and Jenna. Knowing that it’s futile to stay there, the fox signs the pack to leave, and they disappear into thin air.

“That’s a really close call…They’ll be back” Jenna speaks softly, as if to herself.
“How do you know that a church will stop them?” asks Vincent
“I don’t. That’s just pure luck” Vincent looks at her with disbelief.
“For the time being, let’s stay here for the night”
