Chapter 15 – Emerald City Rendezvous

Vincent watches in shock as Jenna plunges down to the abyss. Without thinking, he jumps toward her. Like a skydiver before terminal velocity, Vincent zooms toward Jenna. The wind and the rain hit his face like bullets as he’s speeding through the thick curtain of water. Jenna is very frantic, she can’t stop screaming, which is an advantage to Vincent; he can locate where she is as it’s too dark and fast to see.

When Jenna can see the ground below her, she closes her eyes. This is the end of my adventures. In a split second, she feels something grabs her. Like a hawk catching its prey, Vincent snatches her in the air just ten feet above the ground. They land safely on the ground; He carries her like Superman carries Lois Lane. Jenna still closes her eyes really hard. “You are safe.”

She slowly opens her eyes, and then starts crying. She hits Vincent a couple of times out of fear and frustration. He lets her lashes out on her until she quiets down. “Sorry.” It’s a good thing that no one sees what happen, as it is raining quite heavily.

After composing herself, Jenna just realizes that this is the 2nd time Vincent flies. This time it’s even much higher. “Do you realize that you just flew?”
“Yeah”
“Can you do that again?”
“Not on cue, I guess. That was just a reflex on my part, seeing you in danger. I felt like Clark Kent before he became Superman…You know just like that old miniseries…what it’s called….” He snaps his fingers trying to remember the title.
“I guess many of your abilities are still dormant.”
“Yeah...That’s why I need all the manna crystals to regain all my memory and ability.”
“Oh! We need to call Alfred. He’ll be surprise that we are here” She dials the number, but all she hears is “We’re sorry. This number is no longer in service or has been disconnected.
Great. The owner has disconnected the phone. Took him long enough, though.”
“Do you want to steal another one?” Vincent grins.
“Noooo…..let’s try to nicely borrow from someone, okay?” Jenna rolls her eyes, but smiles nevertheless.

Jenna notices a security guard guarding the entrance to the building. Amazingly enough, this guy doesn’t see what happen just now. She walks toward him, and ask if she can use the public phone inside the building. He refuses as the building won’t be open for at least another 3 hours. She begs him and gives him the little girl “Pleasseeeee.”  Finally, the guy looks at her for a couple of seconds, and opens the door. “Thanks. It will be just a minute.” She winks at him. “Being cute has a lot of advantages.”

She walks toward the payphone, and put some quarters in. “Hello?”
“Hello…” The sound from the other line sounds so groggy.
“Sorry Mister Alfred. Is this a bad time?” Jenna’s voice expresses apologies.
“Who is this?”She can hear clicks and rustles.
“It’s Jenna, sir”
“Ah..Jenna...so glad to hear from you again. Where are you?”
“I’m here in Seattle. Right under the Space Needle”
“Already? Did you take a plane here?”
“Not exactly. I will tell you when you get here. What time can you be here?”
“Give me twenty minutes.”
“Okay. See you then. Wait a minute, how do you find us?” Jenna suddenly remembers Alfred doesn’t know what they look like.
“Tell you what; I’m going to wear a brown overall coat with Seattle Seahawks scarf, a Fedora and a bright pink umbrella. You find me.”
“Okay.  You’ll be looking for a ruggedly handsome man and a typical college girl. We’ll be inside the Space Needle.”
“Great. That shouldn’t be too hard to find at this time of the day. See you soon”
“Ruggedly handsome man?” Vincent smirks widely.
“Shut up.”

Rain still falls. It already turns into a drizzle, softening up from the thunder storm at the crack of dawn. Clusters of puddles are forming everywhere, reflecting shadows of the edifices above. Out of nowhere, a footstep creates ripples, blurring the image of the upside down world. It comes from a middle age man wearing a brown overall coat with Seattle Seahawks scarf on his neck. He wears a Fedora and holds a bright pink umbrella over his head. Green, brown and pink might get me a ticket from the fashion police, but it will be really easy to recognize. He’s laughing at his own thought. He walks toward the Space Needle, and find a young couple waiting inside, accompanied by a slightly annoyed security guard sitting on his desk. He knocks at the glass door, and the guard comes over. He’s mouthing “I believe that couple is waiting for me” while pointing at the couple. The guard unlocks the door while muttering. “About time!! We are not open for another 2 hours. That girl can be really strongly persuasive” The security guard shudders while looking at her.
“And cute too.” The old man lets out a chuckle.
“Yeah. You won’t believe the sound that comes out of her tiny lips. Hey lady, I think your appointment is here. Can you meet outside please?” The guard hollers at the young couple.
“Oh, great. Thanks.” The girl smiles, walks toward the guard followed by a tall unshaven man behind her. “Ruggedly handsome matches the description alright.” The old man is agreeing with her.
“So nice to finally meet you.” The girl shakes his hand, and then hugs him.
The man is taken aback, surprised by the warm welcome, but hugs her back in the end.
He looks at the figure behind her and let out a wide smile. “Welcome to Seattle. I’m Alfred Cohen. You must be Zuriel.”
